# The best way to practice DSA

Short answer. Train three things separately. Writing each algorithm from memory. Naming the pattern a new problem needs. Doing both against a clock. Most people only do the third and wonder why it stays hard.

## The three skills an interview actually tests

 

1. **Recall.** Write binary search, a heap, a union-find, with nothing open. If you cannot, more problems will not fix it.
2. **Recognition.** Read 200 words and name the pattern inside a minute. This is where most candidates lose the round.
3. **Speed under pressure.** Both of the above, out loud, in 35 minutes.

 

## What each method trains

## A week that works

 

- Monday to Wednesday: one algorithm a day. From an empty file, until its tests pass.
- Thursday: five problems you have never seen. Name the pattern before writing a line. Do not code yet.
- Friday: two problems in 35 minutes, spoken out loud.
- Weekend: rewrite whichever algorithm you got wrong on Monday.

 

Four hours a week beats one Sunday marathon. Recall fades on a schedule, so touch it often.

 

## The mistake that eats the most time

 

Opening the editorial at minute 10.

 

Give it 25 minutes. Then take a hint, not the answer. A hint you needed marks a hole you now know about.

 

## How to tell it is working

 

- You name the pattern before you finish reading.
- You write the skeleton without pausing to remember the loop bounds.
- You can say why this algorithm and not the neighbouring one.
